THOUBAL, Dec 4: Thoubal Municipal Council organised a cleanliness drive in and around Thoubal Keithel today with the lofty goal of maintaining cleanliness in the market.
As a part of the cleanliness drive, the sewage drains in the surrounding areas of Thoubal Keithel which had remained blocked for a long period of time also received a thorough cleaning.
Speaking to media persons by the sideline of the cleanliness drive, Hawaibam Pradeep, Executive Officer of Thoubal Municipal Council asserted that the desilting of the surrounding drains was conducted to keep the market place neat and clean.
He added that the Thoubal Municipal Council had received several complaints pertaining to blocking of the drains by the street vendors and shopkeepers who dispose of waste materials such as plastic bottles in the drain. In other cases, they fill the drains with loads of soil thereby causing blockage and inconveniencing the people with foul smell during floods.
As such, he appealed to the shopkeepers and households residing in and around the Thoubal Keithel to register for door to door garbage collection organised by the Thoubal Municipal Council and dispose of their waste materials in a responsible manner.
Further, he appealed to people from throwing away their garbage in the drains or stowing their items atop the drains.
Stating that the Deputy Commissioner had issued an order prohibiting the establishment of shops atop drains and disposing of garbage in drains, he added that the individuals found flouting this order will be appropriately punished as per the law.
