BISHNUPUR, Oct 25: Scythed paddy kept in stacks (pre-harvest) in many important agricultural fields of 29-Kumbi Assembly Constituency have been drenched and some immersed in water due to recent incessant rains causing grief to farmers of the area.
Speaking in this connection, Wahengbam Bobbychand Luwang, former Vice Chairperson, Kumbi Municipal Council and a farmer currently engaged at Kumbi Loutombi Loukon shared that the State was hit with a dry spell when the agricultural fields were in dire need of irrigation earlier this year. Now when the time for threshing paddy and harvesting is close, the skies have opened up due to climate change and this has added to the woes of farmers, he asserted.
He also appealed to the Agriculture Department to take up desilting work of Kumbi Loutombi Lamyai Canal after the harvesting season.
Speaking on behalf of the farmers in this regard, Salam Jayenta Meetei, president, Kumbi Loumee Sinmee Apunba Lup urged those individuals who had dumped hay from their threshing machine into Kumbi Loutombi Lamyai Canal to clear them out within the next day or two.
Further, he appealed to farmers to remove the chunks of mud or soil from the wheels of their threshing machines or tractors before driving on the roads as they stand to cause various inconveniences to school students and common civilians and might result in accidents in extreme cases. He also called upon the District Administration, Bishnupur to look into the matter.
