Gangmumei Kamei Memorial lecture Women in politics deliberated

IMPHAL, Oct 21: The 3rd Gangmumei Kamei Memorial Lecture was held at JN Manipur Dance Academy here today under the aegis of the Gangmumei Kamei Foundation (GK Foundation).
Prof (retired) Tiplut Nongbri of Sociology Department, JNU Delhi delivered the memorial lecture on the theme ‘Gender, customary law and women’s representation in politics’.
Prof (retired) Naorem Joykumar of History Department, Manipur University presided over the programme.
Giving key-note address of the programme, North East-II Region Postmaster General Som Kamei said that his father’s (Prof Gangmumei Kamei) academic career was built over a course of four decades.
Apart from authoring around 15 books, Prof Gangmumei Kamei wrote a number of research papers and articles on History, Anthropology, Sociology, Politics and Economics.
He was an advocate of interdisciplinary studies, Som Kamei said.
After his demise in 2017, the first memorial lecture was organised in 2018 with the primary objective of keeping his legacy alive.
The first memorial lecture was delivered by former VC of Assam University Prof JB Bhattacharya, he said.
Som Kamei said that the GK Foundation has been felicitating meritorious students of Class X and Class XII in addition to sponsoring needy and deserving students. Majakhon Kamei gave  a short introduction of Prof Tiplut Nongbri at the gathering. Prof Nongbri underscored the importance of understanding what it means to look at society through a gendered lens.
She laid emphasis on the importance of looking at society through a gendered lens within the North East tribes due to the egalitarian nature one associates with the North East region at a cursory glance.
