IMPHAL, Jan 21 : A woman with breast cancer has delivered a baby boy after a successful treatment at American Oncology Institute at Babina Speciality Hospital.
Speaking to the media at Babina Speciality Hospital-American Oncology Institute (BSH-AOI) at Sajiwa Central Jail Road today, Medical Oncologist of the institute Dr (Brig) Anil Kumar Dhar said that the rate of breast cancer is increasing in Manipur.
Saying that the woman conceived for the first time at the age of 42, the doctor maintained that the couple was elated on hearing the news.
The celebration, however, was short-lived as a lump was detected on the breast of the woman in the 16th week of pregnancy.
As the lump was cancerous, the couple started consulting doctors, he said and added that the woman was first operated at one hospital in Imphal and went for chemotherapy.
Later, the pregnant woman was admitted at BSH-AOI, he added.
Saying that he and a team of health practitioners advised the couple to undergo chemotherapy with utmost caution, Dr Anil added that the disease was controlled after the fourth chemotherapy.
The woman delivered a healthy baby through C- section in the second week of January, he maintained.
Though the mother and the baby are out of danger, breastfeeding is not advisable for the moment, Dr Anil continued and added that the team at BSH-AOI is delighted on saving the two lives.
"We are able to script this story of success due to the concerted efforts of the colleagues, paramedical, technical and support staff of the institute," he narrated.
Responding to a certain query, Dr Anil maintained that he has seen 50 cases of breast cancer here since stationed at Imphal.
Maintaining that behavioral patterns such as smoking, obesity, consumption of red meat and alcohol contribute to the risk of developing breast cancer, Dr Anil added that some cases of breast cancer cases are hereditary.
Women above 40 years should go for breast cancer screening, he advised.
