IMPHAL, Jan 16 : A 41 year old man, Nongthombam Bishorjit Singh hailing from Saiton Hayaikon Maning Leikai, under Phougakchao PS, Bishnupur passed away on the morning of January 14 after suffering a dog bite on December 19, 2021.
It is not yet clear whether the that dog bit him was rabid or not.
Altogether 5 persons from the same locality had been bitten by the dog on the same day. The other four have been identified as Nongthombam Punshiba Singh (5), Nongthombam Mitson (5), Nongthombam Thoisana Devi (6) and Heinam Amarjit Singh (16).
Out of the five, one had been administered with an anti-rabies vaccine while three received Tetanus shots but unfortunately N Bishorjit received no such medical treatment. As such, his health progressively deteriorated and he began suffering from fever and vomiting etc and was finally admitted to RIMS on January 12. However, he was discharged on January 13 and breathed his last on the morning of January 14 around 6.30.
The three individuals who had not received the anti-rabies vaccine were turned away and told that the vaccine was effective only during the first 24 hours since suffering the dog bite. As such, the three still remain unvaccinated and still not out of the woods yet in terms of the danger to their health.
Dog Protection Society (DPS) conducted a mass vaccination camp in the locality upon receiving a request from Saiton Philantrophic Club secretary A Nabachand Singh for an emergency vaccination camp in order to protect the people of the area from such unfortunate incidents in the future.
DPS secretary Naoba and Saiton GP Pradhan M Ibomcha have informed that steps will be taken up for the benefit of the three unvaccinated individuals in consultation with the Medical Department.
DPS Manipur extended their deepest condolences to the family of the bereaved and appealed to the public to get their pets properly vaccinated.
