IMPHAL, Jan 10 : The Naga Political Leaders Forum Manipur has called for constituting a review committee comprising of all MPs and CMs of the North East States to review AFSPA in the region.
The Naga Political Leaders Forum Manipur said this in a statement today and condemned the massacre of 14 Konyak civilians of Oting village in Mon district of Nagaland on the intervening night of December 4 and 5 by a combined team of Indian Army and Assam Rifles.
The Forum appealed the Government of India and Manipur to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 from the North Eastern States, especially from Nagaland and Manipur as such atrocities were made possible by the existence of AFSPA in the region.
The Forum added that most of the underground insurgent groups operating in the region are engaged in peaceful dialogue with the Government and continued and prolonged imposition of AFSPA in the region is meaningless.
The Naga Political Leaders' Forum also appreciated and welcomed the move of the Government of India to constitute a committee comprising of Dr Vivek Joshi as chairman to review AFSPA for the State of Nagaland but added that reviewing it for the State of Nagaland alone is not enough but should be for the whole North East States.
The Forum also appealed the Government of India to solve the 25 years long Indo-Naga peace talk and initiate steps to bring all the remaining insurgent groups to the negotiation table by signing peace accords with them so that peace can be restored and usher in an era of development in the whole North Eastern States.
