IMPHAL, Jun 19 : Federation of Haomee has submitted a memorandum to Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, for the protection of all the reserved forest areas situated in Manipur particularly in Koubru and Thangjing hill ranges.
Federation of Haomee said that the sites of Koubru range and Thangjing range are revered by the people of Manipur as a sacred site and have immense historical values. Keeping this in mind, some sections of Koubru hill range measuring about 54 sq kms were marked as reserved forest areas in July 1976.
Recently it was found that the sacred sites on both the hill ranges had been destroyed and the reserved forest areas cleared by people belonging to some tribes for plantation of poppy and for agricultural purposes. Such encroachments and actions had hurt the sentiments of the people and tensions were high between the communities which might have resulted in communal violence amongst them any time, added Federation of Haomee in the memorandum.
In light of such issues, Federation of Haomee appealed the Union Ministry to give direction to the competent authority for protection of all the reserved forest areas, historical monuments, and sacred places situated in Manipur by proper demarcations and also eviction of the illegal encroachers.
