IMPHAL, Jun 9 : President of the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) Haobijam Chalamba Meitei has strongly condemned the grenade attack on its headquarters inside DM college last night by unknown miscreants.
Speaking to media persons, Chalamba Meitei stated that carrying out such an attack on the office of AMSU, which, since its inception in 1965 has been fighting for a better future, is against the interest of the people of Manipur.
The union takes such an attack as the work of a terrorist, he added.
Saying that AMSU is an independent body with its own identity and history, he asserted that AMSU is not an organisation that can be influenced by a third party.
The AMSU president then urged the State Government to arrest all involved in the attack and take befitting actions against them at the earliest.
5 student associations-Manipuri Students Federation (MSF), Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students Association (KSA), Students Union of Kangleipak (SUK) and Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS), on the other hand, stated that intimidating students' community is a huge loss for the State.
The organisations appealed to all concerned not to repeat such an act in future.
The North East Students Organisation (NESO) also condemned the grenade attack on the campus of AMSU Headquarters last night and demanded the authorities concerned to bring the perpetrators to book.
NESO is a conglomerate of eight major students associations of North East namely Khasi Students' Union (KSU); All Assam Students' Union (AAMSU); Naga Students' Federation (NSF); Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP); Twipra Students' Federation (TSF); All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU); Garo Students' Union and All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU).
In its statement, NESO maintained that AMSU has taken up very important and sensitive issues for the protection and upliftment of the indigenous people of Manipur.
Saying that such intimidation will not deter the AMSU but strengthen its determination to keep on fighting for the rights and protection of the indigenous people of the State, NESO extended full support and solidarity to the AMSU to move forward in the larger interest of the people.
Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL) also condemned the attack and reminded that mothers of the State are with them (AMSU).
