IMPHAL, May 21: On the occasion of National Endangered Species Day, M Asnikumar Singh, spokesperson of BJP Manipur Pradesh and Chairman MDS stressed on the need to protect and care for those species which are on the verge of extinction.
He continued that as responsible citizens, one should leave behind a Nation for the future generation where all the creatures live in peace and harmony without the fear of extinction.
Talking about Sangai (Rucervus eldii eldii; brow antlered deer), he said the rare species was on the verge of extinction 6-7 decades back.
Although their number has improved substantially they still remain in the endangered category, he added.
Since the past 3 decades, Asnikuma said he has been involved in conservation activities of Sangai and its habitat, the Keibul Lamjao National Park which started facing numerous ecological problems due to development projects undertaken in the past with an aim that the younger generation understand the beauty of being involved in long term projects of saving wildlife and urged all to spread message of awareness to one's friends and family on the occasion of National Endangered Species Day.
He also extended his condolences on the sudden demise of noted environmentalist Sunderlal Bahugana who was the founder of the ‘Chipko movement’ due to Covid.
The BJP spokesman said that Sunderlal Bahugana ignited a sense of ecological responsibility and ethos of love for nature among multiple generations and recalled him as an excellent listener and a humble man, full of simple but touching thoughts.
He prayed that the departed soul may rest in peace and stated that his demise is a huge loss for the Nation.
