IMPHAL, Apr 25: Members of the Mid-Day Meal Workers’ Union Manipur today locked the office of Directorate of Education (S) denouncing Government’s failure to release honoraria of 9 months for around 9,600 mid-day meal workers.
Members of the workers union arrived at the complex of the Directorate Education (S) at Lamphelpat and locked the office at around 11.30 am.
They held banners and raised several slogans demanding the Government and the authorities concerned to release the pending honoraria of the mid-day meal workers.
Mid-Day Meal Workers’ Union, Manipur, president, Yumnam Indrani asserted that even though the Centre has released the funds concerned, the State Government has not yet released the honoraria of the mid-day meal workers for 9 months, from July 2020 to March, 2021.
The union had earlier met several officials of the Government including the Education Minister. Despite assurances given, the honoraria have not been released yet. The office of the Directorate was locked denouncing this apathy towards the mid-day meal workers, she said.
A mid-day meal worker is paid Rs 1000 a month as honorarium.
As workers are not paid for 9 months, they are facing immense problems in maintaining their families amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The office of the Director will remain shut till the honoraria are paid. The mid-day meal workers will further launch a series of agitations until they are paid, she added.
