Mango saplings planted under U Thasi, U Hinghansi campaign

IMPHAL, Apr 20 : Under the “U Thasi U Hinghansi” campaign, one hundred mango saplings sponsored by Dr N Achouba, Retired Director, Family Welfare Services, Manipur were planted at Angaan Ching Eco Park, Kakching today.
Representing Dr Naorem Achouba, his younger brother-N Surchand, daughter-Arunibala, son-in-law Gopen, granddaughter Remi and members of the Management Committee, Angaan Ching Eco Park Kakching including its co-ordinator and Alliance for Development Alternatives-Manipur (ADAM) secretary Surjit Kshetrimayum, caretaker Pukhrambam Biramangol took part in the tree plantation programme.
Notably, Dr N Achouba’s assistance came amid the efforts to reforest portions of the park burnt by a wildfire on March 5, said Surjit Kshetrimayum, co-ordinator, Management Committee Angaan Ching Eco Park.
He also appreciated Dr N Achouba and his family for donating a sum of Rs 20,000 towards the tree plantation programme and maintenance of the plantation.
His contributions have encouraged young climate activists and members of the Management Committee Angaan Ching Eco Park, added Surjit.
Significantly, the park, once barren, has more than 200 species of trees including many medicinal plants.
It is located about 2 kilometres west of Kakching bazar near District Hospital Kakching.
The tree plantation programmes taken up at Angaan Ching Eco Park are more of a movement that encourage and engage youths and school going children.
Besides the tree plantation programmes, one unique endeavour of the climate activists involved with the Angaan Ching Eco Park is the conduct of a “Sunday Eco-Club” which encourages young children and students to take keen interest in saving the environment.
First started in 2004, the Sunday Eco-Club is organised every Sunday. Eminent personalities in different fields are invited to educate and inform the children, students about environment and various fields.
Through the Sunday Eco-Club, students of various schools are encouraged and given the responsibility to take care of the plants and trees. They water the plants and plant saplings as part of the programme. In short, the Sunday Eco-Club encourages students and children to become young climate champions.
Moreover, many eminent personalities have also planted trees at the Angaan Ching Eco-Park and among them are human rights activist Dr John Dayal, Arjuna Awardee M Bimoljit, former MP Dr T Meinya, former Director, School of Environmental Studies, Jadavpur University late Dr Dipankar Chakrabarti, CEO CGH Earth Group Jose Dominic, former MU Chancellor Prof PN Srivastava, renowned writer Moirangthem Inao, Prof YS Rajan and delegates of World Youth Summit 2015.
