ST demand continues unabated

IMPHAL, Mar 22 : The protest of the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) demanding Constitutional recognition of Meetei/Meitei as a Scheduled Tribe entered the third day, on Monday.
Today's demonstration was staged at Ipa Thoukok Shanglen, Uripok.
During the protest, placards that read "We Stand for ST Status"; "NO ST Status NO Rail Line''; "We Demand ST Status for Meetei/Meitei'' etc were displayed.
Speaking to media persons, STDCM general secretary, Okendrajit said that the recommendation of the State Government is compulsory as it is the first step to fulfil the ST demand for Meitei/Meetei.
Reminding that the Central Government had already asked the State to send a recommendation for considering the demand, he urged the State Government to send the requisite recommendation at the earliest.
He also said that two documents- ethnography and socio economic survey report of Meetei/Meitei is required for filing the recommendation.
The committee will continue its agitation till the Government sends the recommendation, he added.
