IMPHAL, Mar 1: The petition filed by Dr Nimaichand Luwang who contested the State Assembly election held in 2017 on BJP ticket in Andro AC against his Congress rival Th Shyamkumar on the ground that there were alleged errors in the nomination paper submitted by Shyamkumar has been dismissed by the High Court of Manipur.
Th Shyamkumar who was earlier disqualified from the State Assembly said that he would urge the Election Commission of India (ECI) to hold by-election to Andro AC together with the Assembly election of Assam as the petition pending against him has been dismissed.
Although Th Shyamkumar was elected on Congress ticket, he supported the BJP-led coalition Government and also served as a Cabinet Minister.
He was disqualified from the State Assembly by the Speaker’s Tribunal on March 28, 2020 for violating the 10th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Following his disqualification, Andro AC was declared as vacant.
“The High Court of Manipur passed a final verdict today dismissing the petition which alleged errors in my election affidavit as untrue”, Shyamkumar said.
The High Court verdict would be a big relief to the people of Andro AC who are not represented in the State Assembly, Shyamkumar said.
Saying that he would urge the ECI to hold by-election to Andro AC together with the Assembly election of Assam, Shyamkumar called upon the people of Andro AC to be prepared for by-election.
