Scribes resume work
IMPHAL, Feb 28: After two days of cease-work strike called by the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM), media houses in Manipur resumed their work today.
AMWJU and EGM had called the ceasework strike condemning a ban imposed on the publication of Poknapham daily for a period of 6 months by an unknown underground outfit. Notably, the threat came days after a hand grenade was lobbed inside the office of Poknapham at Keishampat Thiyam Leirak by a bikeborne assailant at around 6.38 pm on February 13.
Condemning both the incidents (grenade attack and the ban imposed), AMWJU and EGM held sit-in protests at Manipur Press Club on February 26 and 27. Representatives of several civil society organisations also took part in the protests and strongly condemned the threat to Poknapham daily and as well as the press.
Even though AMWJU and EGM had given 48 hours to the group concerned to clarify regarding the ban imposed on Poknapham, none has claimed responsibility and clarified yet.
It may also be mentioned that the person who lobbed the hand grenade inside the office of the Poknapham on February 13 is yet to be identified and arrested. AMWJU and the EGM had appealed to the Government to arrest the person at the earliest.
