Nagaland Assembly resolves to demand AFSPA repeal from NE

The Nagaland Assembly has “unanimously resolved” to demand the Centre for repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the North East.  “The Nagaland Legislative Assembly unanimously resolves to demand that the Government of India repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 from the North East and especially Nagaland,” the resolution moved by Chief Minister Nephiu Rio read.  
The Nagaland Assembly has also sought apology from “appropriate authority” and “assurance of justice” against those responsible for the killing of innocent civilians at Oting village in Mon district of Nagaland earlier this month.
“The Nagaland Legislative Assembly vehemently condemns the massacre that took place in Oting-Tiru village area in Mon district on 4th December 2021 in the indiscriminate firing by the 21 Para Special Forces of the Indian Army in which 13 innocent people were killed,” the resolution added.
The Nagaland Assembly further appealed the “citizens of Mon district, its civil societies, the citizens of the State and mass based organisations to extend cooperation to the Government and its agencies in our collective efforts to demand justice and restore normalcy in the interest of all the citizens”.
The resolution said: “The House appreciates and supports citizens and civil society organisations in their demand for repealing of AFSPA.”  Nagaland Assembly also urged the nego- tiating groups in the Indo-Naga dialogue to “bring the talks to a logical conclusion by reaching a settlement that is honourable, inclusive and acceptable at the earliest”.
