IMPHAL, 18
Governor La Ganesan has wished the people of the State on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the first Chief Minister of Manipur M Koireng Singh on December 19.
In a message to the people, Governor La Ganesan said M Koireng Singh was a freedom fighter for India's Independence during the Second World War. He felt strongly against the British colonial rule which made him join hands with the advancing Indo-Japanese fighters and hoisted the Indian Tricolor for the first time at Moirang in 1944 under INA Colonel Saukat Ali Malik.
Another notable contribution of M Koireng during the war for independence was leading his colleagues in arranging meals for the Azad Hind Fauz soldiers for three months at Moirang, for which he was branded a traitor by the British and had a 'shoot on sight' order against him, the Governor added. His love for the people and loyalty turned him to politics and was thrice the Chief Minister of Manipur.
The Governor added in his message that M Koireng is still considered a stalwart in the political arena who is often credited for ushering the State into the modern era.
In another message, Governor La Ganesan also wished the people, especially residents of Goa, on the Liberation Day of Goa, which falls on December 19.
