Meitei Mayek in currency notes likely soon

IMPHAL, Nov 26: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has initiated due process to put Meitei Mayek in the Indian currency notes.
This was conveyed by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in a letter addressed to Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba on November 8.
The letter also informed that the RBI has even constituted a design committee comprising of experts to put Meitei Mayek on currency notes.
The committee would advise RBI to put Meitei Mayek while printing new series of currency notes, Pankaj Chaudhary told Leishemba Sanajaoba. It was Leishemba Sanajaoba who raised the matter of putting Meitei Mayek in currency notes in the Parliament on February 12 this year. Raising the matter, Leishemba Sanajaoba pointed out that Manipuri language was included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution on August 20, 1992 along with Nepali and Konkani languages.
Even though both Nepali and Konkani languages had been put in currency notes, Manipuri language was left out, the MP told the Parliament. Further informing the Parliament that Manipuri language is studied in Meitei Mayek till MA first semester, the MP urged the Government of India to put Meitei Mayek in currency notes.
