Memorial lecture held

IMPHAL, Oct 26: The first Guru G Gourakishore Sharma Padmashree Memorial Lecture 2021 was held today at the office complex of Huiyen Lallong Manipur Thang Ta Cultural Association in Irilbung.
Speaking at the programme, Prof H Tombi, former VC Manipur University said the culture of the State was amongst the richest in the world and stretched the need for the current generation to focus on preservation of the rich culture of the State including Thang-Ta.
He added that the contribution of the late Guru G Gourakishore in the field of Thang Ta and his teachings are commendable.
Manipur State Kala Akademi Awardee and literary critic Longjam Joychandra gave a lecture on the topic 'Manipuri kala amasung sanskriti da mityeng ama'. In his lecture, Longjam Joychandra said Thang-Ta is an integral part of Manipuri culture and it was known as 'Huiyen Lallong' in early times. Thang-Ta reached its peak during the reign of King Khagemba and the following rulers also used it to safeguard the Manipuri Kingdom and it also played a vital role during the Seven Years Devastation and the Anglo-Manipur War.
