IMPHAL, Oct 16 : The Centre for Research and Advocacy (CRA) and Youth Forum for Protection of Human Rights in Manipur have urged the Government of Manipur and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) not to go ahead with the 'ADB financed Imphal Ring Road' without the consent of all the indigenous communities that are going to be affected.
The resolution was taken at a consultation programme on the project organised by the two organisations today at Manipur Press Club to discuss the adverse effects of the project on the indigenous communities as well as various important landmarks which have cultural and historical prominence in the State, said a statement issued by CRA.
Participants of the consultation programme also urged the Government to roll back the eviction order served on the villages including Tharon, Langthabal Chingthak amongst others.
Speaking at the programme, Jiten Yumnam from CRA stressed on the need to conduct a detailed impact assessment and to apply safeguard policies before implementing a project of such magnitude.
Chiefs of various villages who had received eviction notice accused the Government of not consulting the villagers before the plan was made and said important historical sites including Ipum Pat, which is revered as a sacred site, will be lost to the project.
Nongthombam Radhamani, representing Nongpok Leingak Apunba Nupi Lup, said the proposed Imphal Ring Road will affect the residential areas in Khurai Konsam Leikai, Chingmeirong, Sangakpham and other densely populated areas. She added that the ring road should not be built in residential and congested areas.
