IMPHAL, Jan 11 : Organic farmers of Kakching have started cultivating turmeric planted under the Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA) at Khuman Keraching yesterday.
About 500 farmers, under Kakching Organic Producers Company Private limited, with spades in hands started cultivating the organic turmeric today.
A team led by MOMA Project Director K Debadutta Sharma visited the farm at Khuman Keraching.
During the visit, K Debadutta said there are 15 organic producers companies under the MOMA and the Kakching Organic Producers Company (KOPC) is leading as the best performing FPC (Farmer Producer Company).
The KOPC, which is only entering the second phase now is a FPC that has a very good work culture. Recognising their performance and work culture, MOMA will be providing it with required and necessary equipment, infrastructure and all possible assistance. MOMA had earlier provided the FPC with vehicles, he said adding that the KOPC will be reaping the benefits of their hard work.
The cultivation is likely to yield about 250-300 metric tonnes of organic turmeric. MOMA will ease the burden of farmers in finding markets. The agency will assist them in finding proper markets to sell their products, said Debadutta.
Chairman of Kakching Organic Producers Company, Naorem Achou said turmeric plantation covers an area of about 8 hectares while ginger plantation covers about 5 hectares. The cultivation may take some days, he said.
In 2020, the company produced about 150 tonnes of turmeric. This year, it may yield about 250 tonnes. Organic ginger and turmeric are also planted at Kakching Mamang Ching and Phunal Ching, he said.
Achou also said that the number of farmers under the Kakching Organic Producers Company has increased by 50 percent from last year. The current strength of the farmers under the company is 500 and many have also shown interest in joining the company, he said.
