Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) in association with Manipur State Commission for Women conducted a one-day awareness programme on "Women Rights and Responsibilities for Sustainable Development" at DESAM's head office at Kwakeithel today.
The awareness programme conducted in line with the "Sustainable Development Goal" as adopted by the United Nations on October 25 in 2015 was attended by Dr Binota Meinam, Chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Women; RK Tharaskana, president of WASEDEV and Shital Oinam, vice president of DESAM as presidium members.
In the keynote speech, DESAM's secretary women welfare, Sanoujam Nikita said that even as the women have been a forerunner in almost all the mass movements in the State, they are hardly incorporated during policy makings. As such, there is a need for a movement to bring gender equality, to empower and conscientization among all, she continued.
While demanding 'Fast Track Special Courts' in every district of the State, Nikita also drew attention of all concerned to formulate legislation with more provisions to protect and safeguard witnesses of crimes related to children and women in the State.
Ema, RK Tharaksana, in the meantime highlighted the immense role of women in the Manipuri society and went on to stress on the importance of educating all about rights and responsibilities of women and principle of gender equality enshrined in the Constitution of India.
Prof Binota Meinam, at the occasion lamented the pitiable budget allocated for women which constitute 51 percent of the State population and further said the State should do to ensure women are encouraged in decision making.
DESAM's president Shital also stressed on the need for rectification in the aged old patriarchal tradition in the State to lessen the discrimination meted out to women for ages.
The event was also attended by Lourembam Dayapati, Member of Manipur State Women  Commission and Advocate Thiyam Rajkishore, Chairman Child Welfare Committee, Imphal West as resource persons and elucidated on matters related to the topic, said a press release of DESAM.
