IMPHAL,
Sep 2: Joint Coordination Committee on Wildlife and Biodiversity
(JCCWB) Manipur has appealed to the people of Manipur, especially
fishermen and women to refrain from practising electrofishing method.
A
press release issued by Sapana Laishram, Co-convenor JCCWB, said that
electrofishing is widely practised in the State, even amid the lockdown,
which is truly unfortunate.
Catching fishes using such method is
punishable as per Manipur Fisheries Act, Wildlife Protection Act and
Biological Diversity Act, she said, adding that electrofishing not only
stuns the fishes but also has negative environmental impacts.
Electrofishing
is also detrimental to aquatic plants and animals, she lamented.
Appealing all to shun catching fishes with electrical equipment, Sapana
cautioned of taking legal actions against all those who are found
practising the same.
