IMPHAL, Aug 4
Yelhou Mee Thoupei has stated that the body backs and supports the movement to include Manipuri language in the list of Assam’s Associate Official Languages.
Yelhou Mee Thoupei in a statement, put up a long historical account and the relationship between Manipur and Assam.
The relationship between Manipur and Assam has been very good since the 15th century, it said while maintaining that the two erstwhile kingdoms helped one another during trying times and shared a very cordial relationship besides almost similar governance, economy, religion, social norms, tradition and culture.
As such, many Manipuris, especially Meiteis have been residing in Assam for the past 5 centuries, it said and added that  now there are approximately 1.7 lakh Manipuri speaking citizens in the State.
Despite the huge number of Manipuri speakers, Assam however has not listed the language, which is also a scheduled language, as one of its associate official languages till date, placing the youths who studied and opted for Manipuri at a disadvantage during competitive examinations conducted by the service commission of the State.
The issue must be taken seriously, said Yelhou Mee Thoupei while adding that they deserve all rights and privilege of being an Assamee. Appealing to the Assam Government to address the issue of including Manipuri language as one of its associate official languages, the body also urged the Manipur Government to extend all sort of assistance towards the cause. The body also appealed to all Meitei brethren residing in other parts of the country and the world to preserve the unique identity the Meitei community possesses.
