NHRC urged
IMPHAL, Jul 26: The Human Rights Defenders' Alert-India has written to the National Human Rights Commission seeking intervention in the defamation case against Additional SP Th Brinda.
The HRDA in its letter appealed the Commission to immediately take necessary steps and consider exercising Section 12(b) of the Protection of Human Rights Act and intervene in the case where a Court of the Civil Judge Senior Division Imphal East has passed restraining order on Th Brinda and several journalists. A whistle-blower and human rights defender's freedom of expression, especially when it works towards promoting and protecting the rule of law, must never be curbed, it said.
The HRDA in its letter also appealed the Commission to direct the Home Secretary, Government of India, to cause an inquiry into the matter and provide protection to Th Brinda.
