Lawyers' assn appeals
IMPHAL, Mar 29: While acknowledging the concerted efforts being taken up by the State to face outbreak of novel coronavirus, Indian Association of Lawyers, Manipur Chapter has sought the attention of the Government towards police conduct in enforcing the curfew/lockdown.
Alleging some police personnel of discharging their duties in a very arbitrary manner, having no regard to the provision of law and order of district administration, the lawyers' association in a statement issued by its general secretary Kh Shamungou reminded that the police need to have knowledge that the State Government had categorically declared some essential services to be exempted from the preview of restrictions imposed under the order of lockdown/curfew, like Fire Service, Medical Service, opening of grocery and vegetable shops/vendors etc.
Giving example, Kh Shamungou recalled an incident where one lady police officer along with some personnel came to Thangmeiband Lilasing khongnangkhong in a Gypsy and 'forcibly' seized some vegetable items from two women vendors. The personnel threatened the women vendors to evacuate immediately in a 'very merciless manner.' When he (Shamungou) intervened and asked police not to seize the vegetables, they also threatened him not to talk against them, alleged the statement.
