Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed Kisan Adhikar Diwas on the occasion of the 145th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and 36th death anniversary of Indira Gandhi today morning at Congress Bhavan, BT Park here.
Former Union Minister and AICC in-charge Manipur Bhakta Charan Das, ex-Chief Minister and Congress Legislative Party leader Okram Ibobi Singh, MPCC president M Okendra, chief whip of CLP Govindas Konthoujam , vice-president MPCC T Mangibabu, MLAs, ex-MLAs and other members of the party attended the function.
Ex-Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh led in paying floral tributes to the portraits of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Indira Gandhi.
The function was followed by a Satyagraha of the Congress workers against the “anti-farmer and anti-labourer laws”.
On the occasion, former Union Minister Bhakta Charan Das said, “Our country is a country of farmers. We all are here to commemorate the sacrifices made by Indira Gandhi. She had brought Green Revolution to our country and it increased productivity. She provided banking facilities to each and every farmer by opening banks in rural areas. She initiated major and medium irrigation projects which resulted in high productivity in the agriculture sector. Without agriculture, we are nothing. Agriculture contributes a huge percentage of the GDP”.
However, the hopes of the farmers are being “crushed” by the present BJP Government. The Government has “seized” the rights of the farmers. “All small scale industries, businesses have started to disappear due to lack of attention of the Government coupled with the entry of giant industries owned by the likes of Ambani and Adani,” he said, adding the Congress party is fighting against the present Government to “restore” the rights of the farmers.
He also observed, “I have seen in Manipur the prices of the vegetables and other essential items are rapidly increasing. The condition of the farmer and the sellers are getting worse.
“Our Congress Party has been fighting to fulfil what Mahatma Gandhi, Vallabhbhai Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru had dreamt for the betterment of this country”. Ex-Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh said the party will show its strength and oppose the Farmers’ Bill passed by the Centre. Protests will be observed across India, mainly in Congress ruled States demanding withdrawal of the Bill. The Bill, he said, is “against” the poor farmers of the country.
