Stranded truckers aided
IMPHAL, Oct 4 : Highway Truck Owners Welfare Organisation (HITOWO) and All Manipur Drivers Welfare Association (AMDWA) today reached out to truck drivers and helpers who are stranded near FCI rice godown at Sawombung with relief materials today.
A team of the two organisations led by HITOWO's general secretary, Laishram Ratan Khuman and AMDWA's general secretary, Sanjoy Kshetrimayum visited the place and handed out the materials which can support the stranded truckers for around 20 days.
Speaking to the media, Sanjoy Kshetrimayum said that the drivers and helpers of around 80 trucks used in transporting FCI rice were grounded as the godown was shut indefinitely after some staff of the godown tested positive for COVID-19 recently.
Due to lack of proper lodging and adequate food, the drivers and their helpers are facing a difficult situation and some of them are in need of medical attention, he said.
The assistance was extended in view of the plight of these truckers who are playing their part in solving the people's need by transporting food items during such a crucial juncture, he said and further sought necessary help from authorities concerned so that items brought by these truckers are unloaded and to facilitate their return home.
