IMPHAL, Sep 11: As part of the 20th foundation day of The Sangai Express,  editorial and management staff of the daily  carried out a tree plantation programme inside Kangla today.
The Sangai Express publisher Nishikant Singh Sapam, editors Khogendra Khomdram (Manipuri) and Hijam Rajesh (English) , manager Sapam Sachin, editorial and management staff as well as Environment and Climate Change Director Dr Y Nabachandra planted around 120 trees (consisting of mayokfa, agar, uningthou, teak, chahui and samba as well as other trees) near Brindavanchandra temple inside Kangla.
Speaking on the sideline of the tree plantation programme, Nishikant Singh Sapam said that The Sangai Express began its first publication on September 11, 1999 and in all these 20 years, the paper has always adopted a strong commitment regarding the conservation and the protection of the environment.
The tree plantation programme has been organised with this very objective, he said.
Nishikant Singh Sapam continued that the population of the earth is increasing day by day and the temperature is on the rise as well.
There are also great changes in the climate and seasons now. Conserving forests will help balance the negative impacts, he said, lamenting that it takes a long time for a plant to grow and mature but it only takes a while to cut down a tree.
The world is currently holding its breath in fear due to the fires at the Amazon rainforest, he said, adding that he would like to encourage the people, specially the readers, as well as the viewers of ISTV News to plant more trees.
He further appealed to all to plant trees and protect the environment so as to create a more beautiful and green Manipur.
