IMPHAL, Aug 29: Session Judge, Thoubal, sentenced murder convict Mayanglam-bam Khellendro alias Amujao to life imprisonment, apart from directing the State authority concerned to provide a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the father of the victim within two months.
The sentence was announced in an open Court today following the sentence hearing in connection with the brutal murder of one Keisham Premila in April of 2012.
Mayanglambam Khellendro (41) s/o Radhamohan of Kakching Wangma Ningthou Pareng, was convicted by the same Court on August 17 for the murder and robbery of Keisham Premila.
Khellendro was produced before the Session Court for the sentence hearing from Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa and during the processing, the Court heard the submission of A Gopendro, APP of the State, and the Court appointed Amicus curiae, Advocate L Gambhir.
The APP submitted that Mayanglambam Khellendro had called out the victim from her parental home on the pretext of eloping but instead he took her to Mahadeva Hill and murdered her.
After committing the crime, the convict concealed the murder weapon and also took the gold ornaments and mobile phone before hiding the body inside a thick bush. After some days, Khellendro went back to the spot and burned the dead body by spraying kerosene with the intention to destroy every evidence.
He was finally arrested on April 16, 2012, the APP mentioned, praying for awarding the maximum punishment to the convict for the murder and burning the dead body.
The Court, after hearing both parties, sentenced Khellendro to imprisonment for life and directed the prosecution to provide Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the father of the victim.
A large number of angry locals, family members of the victim and some women CSO leaders were present at the Court room during the sentence hearing today and to prevent any unwanted incident inside the Court room, some of them were taken out by a police team from the room.
