Kakching/Jiri, Aug 20: As held in other parts of the State, 28th Manipuri Language Day was observed at Kakching and Jiribam district commemorating the inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution on August 20,1992.
Sahitya Seva Samiti Manipur, Kakching observed the day at the auditorium of Library and Information Centre, Kakching.
As part of the observance, a poetry book titled "Thammoi Ninggai" written by Nongmaithem Sunita was published.
Sahitya Seva Samiti Manipur, Kakching president Kengba Yengkhom, Sahitya Akademi Awardee Maibam Nabakishwar, Pukhrambam Kunjo and retired ZEO Pukhrambam Nimai Singh attended the event.
In Jiribam, the Manipuri Language Day was observed at the auditorium of Jiribam Higher Secondary School.
The observance was organised by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Jiribam. Khaidem Kanta Singh, general secretary of Manipuri Short Story Society, India, S Khogen Singh, president, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Jiribam, S Maniton Singh, retd Principal Jiribam Higher Secondary School, L Ranjit Kumar Singh, Principal Jiribam Higher Secondary School attended the event as presidium members.
As part of the observance, a poem recitation competition for students was held in which Kh Lakshmi Devi and Moirangthem Tomei of Jiribam Higher Secondary School secured first and second position respectively. Th Chinglembi Devi of Ramanjit Standard English School secured third position.
L Nandashori Devi and Sahitya Akademi, Manipuri Language Cell Advisory Board Member Thokchom Biswanath Singh talked about the origin of Manipuri Language and its present status.
Many poets from Jiribam and Cachar valley recited poems at the event.
Nehru College Manipuri Students' Union also observed the day at Pailapool Community Hall, Cachar today.
I Binod Singha, ex-general secretary, MSA, Assam, Dwijen Achoibam, HOD, Dept Of Manipuri, Nehru Collage, Pailapool and Dr Y Rasbehari Singha, Associate Prof Dept of English attended the event as presidium members.
