Biren issues call to indigenes

IMPHAL, Apr 5 : Former Chief Minister N Biren Singh has appealed to all the indigenous communities of the State to unite and work together to preserve their rich cultural heritage and tradition.
He made the appeal at the International Mother Language Day 2025 organised by INTACH, Manipur Chapter and Rongmei Literature Society at JN Manipur Dance Academy here today.
The programme was held under the theme "Intangible Cultural Heritage : Folklore & Oral Tradition of the Indigenous Rongmei Community of Manipur".
Addressing the function as chief guest from New Delhi virtually, N Biren extended gratitude to the organizations working to preserve the languages of Manipur's indigenous communities.
It is the responsibility of all the indigenous communities to preserve the rich and diverse cultural heritage and tradition of the State, he said.
Sahitya Akademi awardee Saratchand Thiyam, on the other hand,  emphasized the importance of preserving mother languages.
He said that these languages, if not promoted, may be lost to future generations.
Globalization affects languages, he said and stressed that mother languages are an integral part of culture and should not be neglected.
He went on to say that Meiteilon and Rongmei, two indigenous languages of Manipur, are vulnerable and may disappear if not preserved and promoted by all concerned.
Manipur State Kala Akademi awardee cum president of Rongmei Literature Society Ragongning Gangmei also  attended the programme among others.
