State Handloom Expo 2025 launched

IMPHAL, Apr 2: The State Handloom Expo (Hathkargha Mela) 2025 kicked off at the Urban Haat, Nilakuthi, Imphal today.
Organised under the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handloom), Central Ministry of Textiles, the mela will continue till April 12.
At the launch of the expo, State Handloom and Textiles Director E Jeeten said Manipur has vast potential in the handloom sector.
Acknowledging the potential of the State, for welfare of the weavers, the Central Government has given the green light to organise two more melas, which serves as market platforms, he said.
The State Department was earlier allowed to organise only 6 melas or marketing events. In the financial year 2025-26, the State will organise 8 melas in total, significantly improving the chance for weavers to showcase and sell their products, he said.
The expo today is the first of the eight melas, organised by the Manipur Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation, he added.
E Jeeten also underscored the importance of adopting new designs by weavers to improve their sales.
He said, the Handloom and handicraft Department is initiating a project to make a wide range of environmentally friendly products that could replace plastic bags.
He also urged weavers to apply for insurance schemes.
