IMPHAL, Feb 15: Former Chief Minister N Biren Singh has brought attention to the 'long-ignored issue' of illegal migration across the Indo-Myanmar border.
According to N Biren, this problem has been persistent, with past cases like the detention of 28 Myanmar Nationals caught with fake Aadhaar cards.
In a Facebook post, the former Chief Minister emphasized that the Indo-Myanmar border was neglected by previous Governments, unlike the Indo-Pak and Indo-Bangladesh borders and this lack of attention has led to significant demographic changes and crises in the region.
Asking why the issue of illegal immigration was overlooked for decades, N Biren maintained that the demographic changes in the State could have been prevented had previous Governments implemented stricter measures earlier.
N Biren's statement implies that the lack of effective policies and enforcement has contributed to the current demographic challenges in Manipur.
The Facebook post read, "The issue of illegal migration across the Indo-Myanmar border has been ignored for far too long. Cases from the past such as the detention of 28 Myanmar Nationals caught with fake Aadhaar cards are not new, they are just a reflection of a deeper, ongoing problem.
Unlike the Indo-Pak and Indo-Bangladesh borders, the Indo-Myanmar border was never taken seriously by policymakers from previous Governments. Had there been stricter measures earlier, the demographic changes we see today and the resulting crisis could have been prevented.
The question remains: Why was this issue overlooked for decades? And who will take responsibility for the consequences India now faces?"
