This event marks the second instance of a command headquarters being captured by insurgent forces, following the takeover of the northeastern command headquarters in Lashio, Shan state, by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) in August of the preceding year.
Both the MNDAA and the Arakan Army are constituents of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, which also includes the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA). The Arakan Army has effectively established control over 15 out of 18 townships in Rakhine state, including complete authority over the 271-kilometre border with Bangladesh. The ULA’s enduring ambition for secession from Myanmar appears increasingly attainable; should this aspiration materialise, it would signify Asia’s second successful national liberation movement since Bangladesh.
