IMPHAL, Jan 15:  Locals and Hospital Management Committee of Primary Health Centre (PHC) Wangoo Laipham have locked the hospital gate in protest against the recent transfer of a doctor from the PHC. A public meeting in this connection was held at the Wangoo Laipham PHC located under Sugnu Assembly Constituency in Kakching district today with the participation of important Hospital Management Committee officials including chairman Loitongbam Sharat, advisor, L Kherchandra, executive member, Thoudam Dhamen, local elder L Chaoba, local public and meira paibi leaders from the area. Addressing the gathering, Th Dhamen said that a doctor from the PHC was transferred on December 23, 2024 without sending any replacement. The transfer left only three MOs working at the PHC, including the MO in-charge. The PHC has two staff nurses and no supervisor, he maintained.
The staff has been working 24/7 for the last 10 years to serve the public despite shortage of medical personnel. However, the PHC has stopped providing 24 hour medical service since January 11, added Th Dhamen. As the concerned authorities have failed to address the shortage of medical staff at the PHC despite repeated appeals, the public along with the PHC staff have decided to lock the gate until their grievances are resolved, said the executive member.
Additionally, Amom Angousana, meira paibi leader, said that they appealed to the Health Minister, through their local MLA, to address the shortage of medical staff at the PHC and send a replacement for the recently transferred doctor. Though the Minister assured to fulfil their demands, no positive steps  have been taken up, she said. They also made a request to the CMO to arrange a doctor for the PHC without any success.
