IMPHAL, Jul 18: In a victory for Manipur and Thang-Ta, the High Court of Manipur has banned all National Level Sqay sports competitive meets, said Huyen Langlon Thang-Ta Association, Manipur in a statement.
This decision of the HC came after the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, withdrew recognition of the Sqay Federation of India as a Regional Sports Federation in 2023 for submitting false information and misrepresenting facts.
Huyen Langlon Thang-Ta Association said the Sqay martial art form was copied from Thang-Ta by one Thang-Ta student and instructor named Nazir Ahmad Mir from Jammu & Kashmir. Subsequently, Sqay Federation of India (SFI) was recognised as a Regional Sports Federation (RSF) by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
While a case was registered against the SFI and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, in the High Court of Manipur in 2020, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports withdrew its recognition of the SFI as a Regional Sports Federation (RSF) in 2023. The HC now has banned National level Sqay competitive meets, said the association.
