Myanmarese held with heroin

A 65-year-old Myanmar National has been arrested with heroin in Champhai, an official of Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department said.
The Department spokesman Peter Zohmingthanga said that officials of the Excise Department in collaboration with personnel of Assam Rifles launched a joint operation near Tlangsam village in the Champhai district near the Myanmar border and recovered 323 grams of heroin.
A drug peddler identified as Zamdolian (65), a resident of Bulfek village in Myanmar’s Chin State has been arrested for possessing heroin believed to be smuggled from Myanmar, he said.
The accused was booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, he said.
The official also said that the Excise and Narcotics Department alone has seized 37.8 kilograms of heroin since January.
More than 124 kilograms of Methamphetamine tablets, 553 kilograms of ganja (cannabis) and 7,104 tablets of Alprazolam, among others, have also been seized during the same period, he said.
At least 61 people, including eight females, have died due to abuse of drugs, mainly heroin since January, according to the official.
